Skype recovering after major outage

Thursday, December 23, 2010

Skype was recovering on Thursday from a major outage that left millions of people unable to use the popular internet communication service.

Skype chief executive Tony Bates said in a blog post and video that at 17:00 GMT, some 16.5 million people were online on Skype around the world, about 80% of normal traffic.

Bates "apologized profusely" for the technical problems that began on Wednesday and "took almost every user offline".

"This has been a very tough 24 hours for many of our users," he said. "Our priority has been to stabilise the problem, and then to begin to restore access to Skype."

Bates said engineers had "stabilised Skype's core functionality - IM (instant messaging), audio and video - but it will take longer for us to restore offline IM and group video calling."

He said the company was planning to offer Skype credit vouchers to paying customers inconvenienced by the outage.

Mega-supernodes needed

In a blog post, Skype explained that the outage was caused by a lack of computers known as "supernodes" and that engineers had created new "mega-supernodes" in a bid to get the service up and running again.

Skype, which was founded in 2003, bypasses the standard telephone network by channelling voice, video and text conversations over the internet.

The company announced plans in August to raise up to $100m in shares by listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Technology blogger Om Malik, writing on his blog GigaOm.com, said the outage was a serious issue for a company that is "starting to ask larger corporations for their business".

"If I am a big business, I would be extremely cautious about adopting Skype for business, especially in the light of this current outage," Malik said.

"(Skype) needs to ensure that it doesn't go down. Even for a few minutes."

Up on the housetop, reindeer pause
Out jumps good ol’ Santa Claus
Down through the chimney with lots of toys
All for the little ones, Christmas joys
Ho, Ho, Ho! Who wouldn’t go?

Up on the housetop, click, click, click

Oh, dear Santa, fill it well
Give her a dolly that laughs and cries
One that will open and shut her eyes
Ho, Ho, Ho! Who wouldn’t go?
Ho, Ho, Ho! Who wouldn’t go?
Up on the housetop, click, click, click
Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick!
Next comes the stocking of little Will
Oh, just see what a glorious fill
Here is a hammer and lots of tacks
Also a ball and a whip that cracks

Down through the chimney with good Saint Nick!

Michelle Ryan Foot Fetish Video? Rex Ryan's Wife's Maybe Movie Surfaces (VIDEO)

Jets star Darrell Revis told Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger that Rex Ryan addressed the "foot fetish" report in a team meeting.

"He basically came in there and said, 'You guys might know about the situation; some of you guys might not know,'" Revis said. "'You'll find out later on today. Right now, I feel embarrassed, but it's something personal with me. We need to focus on Chicago.'"

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan says it's a "personal matter" and declined to talk about a "foot-fetish" report posted by the sports website Deadspin that show four videos of a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to Ryan's wife, Michelle.

The videos show a woman displaying her toes to an off-screen cameraman who sounds a lot like the coach. The two are having an intimate chat about her feet.

Asked about it during a conference call Wednesday, Ryan said he is "not really going to discuss it."

This isn't the first time the Jets have turned up on Deadspin this season.

In October, the site reported that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre sent racy text messages and photos to a former game hostess while he was the Jets' quarterback in 2008.

The NFL is still investigating the allegations.

service being down. Image: Flickr / philwolff / CC-BY-SA
The Skype service has been reported as down for many users on Wednesday morning. Though spot-tests are showing that, for the most part, Skype is working, it isn’t working all the time. Some users aren’t able to log in, others are having problems with crashing apps. The Skype team has said only one thing about it:
Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype – we’re investigating, and we’re sorry for the disruption to your conversations.
The meteoric growth of Skype
The reports that Skype is down are raising memories of the 2007 Skype outage. In 2007, the service went down for around 24 hours. Despite these hiccups, the company has continued to grow. Skype currently reports about 25 million users. These 25 million users tend to use Skype on a regular basis for everything from personal conversations to on-camera interviews for news. Skype has run into problems because of the high amount of bandwidth it requires, and has been banned by many organizations because of this bandwidth hog tendencies.
Skype downtime may last hours
The fact that Skype is down may encourage some people to move to other Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. About one hour after the original report of Skype being down, the Skype team posted to their Twitter:
Our engineers and site operations team are working non-stop to get things back to normal – thanks for your continued patience.

Are you a Skype user? Is Skype down for you? What problems are you encountering?

Chocolate Could Cure Persistent Cough

Chocolate could provide the key to tackling a persistent cough.
Researchers are carrying out the final stages of clinical trials on a drug that contains theobromine, an ingredient in cocoa and chocolate.

If the trials are successful, the drug could be on the market within two years. Millions worldwide suffer from a persistent cough, one that lasts for more than two weeks.

Some have asthma-like symptoms while others suffer from heartburn, reports the Daily Mail.

But most widely available cough products soothe the symptoms rather than deal with the cause, and have been criticised for side effects such as drowsiness.

There are safety concerns about side effects from other products that are codeine-based, which use a chemical called an opioid.

Previous research by London’s National Heart and Lung Institute found that theobromine is 33 percent more effective than codeine at stopping coughing. It works directly on the vagus nerve, which is responsible for persistent coughing.

Research in South Korea has shown that theobromine has none of the side effects associated with standard drug treatments for persistent cough.

Professor Alyn Morice, who heads the Hull Cough Clinic, said: “Due to the drawbacks of current opioid drugs such as codeine, we are in desperate need of a non-opioid treatment with a drastically improved side effect profile for patients.”

Heidi Jones' Colleagues Not Thrilled About Alleged Assault Lie

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Heidi Jones, a meteorologist for WABC/Channel 7, told police and colleagues that a man attempted to rape her in Central Park. Her coworkers at the channel believed her -- but the police didn't.

Now that it has been revealed Jones, a beautiful forecaster and accomplished marathon runner, completely fabricated the attempted assault, those who worked with her are dismayed, the New York Post reports.

"All this trust we had is shattered. We're like a family. We feel betrayed," the source said, adding that it had become "common knowledge" around the newsroom that Jones claimed to have been attacked in late September.
"To the point that security guards would offer to escort her home," the source said.
Jones had alleged that a Hispanic man grabbed her while jogging in Central Park, pulled her into nearby bushes and attempted to rape her. After a police investigation found inconsistencies in her story, Jones admitted that she had lied to police about the incident, claiming that personal problems were a catalyst for the invented story. Now the city is mulling whether or not to charge Jones for filing a false report, which would be tantamount to a misdemeanor.

Jones' lawyer released this statement to the press: "Miss Jones has had a distinguished career as a broadcast journalist and urges all concerned to refrain from jumping to conclusions about the unproven charges against her being discussed in the press."

Officials from the station say that Jones has been suspended pending an investigation.

Light Snow and a Wintry Mix for Thursday

Light snow will spread across parts of North Carolina by daybreak Thursday morning. The precipitation will be light, but with a very cold ground, any frozen precipitation that falls will stick to the ground and pavement surfaces. Here are some thoughts about the forecast for Thursday morning broken down by region...
Triangle
-Light snow begins around daybreak and the morning rush hour.
-A dusting to 1" of accumulation possible with slightly higher accumulation possible north of Raleigh near the Virginia border.
-The light snow will mix with and change to sleet and freezing rain through the morning. That will create a light glazing on top of any accumulated snow.
-The wintry mix should change to just a chilly light rain around midday or early afternoon.
-Slick spots possible on area roadways from the morning commute through the lunch hour.

Sandhills
-Light snow begins around daybreak, give or take a couple hours.
-A dusting of snow possible.
-The light snow will mix with and change to light sleet and freezing rain in the morning creating a glazing on top of the dusting of snow.
-Any wintry precipitation should change to just a chilly light rain by late morning.
-Slick spots possible on area roadways through the morning commute.

Coastal areas
-Light precipitation will arrive at the coast around daybreak to a couple hours after sunrise.
-Some locations just inland from the coast may see a brief period of snow mixed with rain before a quick change over to chilly light rain.
-A chilly light rain or drizzle will fall for most of the day after that brief period of a mix in some inland areas.

As with any winter weather event in North Carolina, forecasting the exact location and the exact amount of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is very tricky. Be sure to check in with News 14 Carolina Thursday morning for the latest weather and traffic conditions.

We also continue to monitor the forecast for the weekend. Another area of low pressure will develop near the Gulf coast late Friday and track toward the Carolinas. That will spread rain across the state for the daytime hours Saturday. There is still a lot of uncertainty for Saturday night. Computer forecast models are still not consistent with various scenarios that could play out. There is the possibility that Saturday's rain will change to snow in parts of North Carolina. It is much too early to make any calls on what locations will see that snow and how much will be possible. We should have a better idea on this system by Friday.

Gen. David Petraeus: Most Fascinating of 2010

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Gen. David Petraeus is Barbara Walters' pick for the Most Fascinating Person of 2010. Walters called the top commander in Afghanistan "an American hero."

"In life, it seems, there are people who break things and people who fix them. This man is a fixer," she said on the ABC special, "10 Most Fascinating People of 2010." "A lot depends on General Petraeus and his combination of humanity and strength."

In June, Petraeus was appointed by President Barack Obama to replace former Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. Petraeus had previously served as the commander of the Multi-National Force-Iraq in 2006, where he was seen as the one who turned the tide of violence in that nation and could do the same in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan -- a country which has defeated every foreign army that ever entered it -- may be the ultimate test. After nine years of war, the Afghans' support of U.S. presence in their country has dwindled, according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll. Since last year, Afghans' confidence that U.S. and NATO forces can provide security and stability in their area has also dropped.

But Petraeus is a different kind of general, fighting a different kind of war. The counterinsurgency strategy largely authored and being implemented now by Petraeus is based on the idea that wars cannot be won with bullets alone, but instead through the hearts and the minds of the local population. Human terrain is the decisive terrain.

To Petraeus, this means gaining the trust of the local population, opening schools, teaching farmers new techniques, helping businesses grow, bolstering the government to provide basic services to citizens, and ultimately, keeping the peace to keep it from becoming a launching pad for terrorists.

Latin Grammys 2010: 10 Things You Didn't See on TV

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Here's some of the best off-camera moments from the red carpet and backstage at the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas.

1. ChocQuibTown, winners for best alternative song, were generous with their talent, singing a capella for press backstage. Lead singer Goyo, beautiful in her blue turban, provided the melody while bandmates Miguel "Slow" Martinez and Carlos "Tostao" Valencia provided the groove and beat. Asked about her cool outfit, Goyo explained, "The dress was designed for me by Colombian designer Olga Piedrahita. I wanted to be me, and wear something that made my bronze, Pacific color stand out." It did and she rocked!

2. A Scarf Craze: Ricky Martin wore one around his neck over the slick gray suit he wore for person of the year. Tonight, Marc Anthony wore one wrapped around his neck during his performance. Maybe they were cold. We think it'll start a fashion trend.

3. Juan Luis Guerra wants to record with Alejandro Sanz. Period. Oh, and he does want to record a bachata with Paul McCartney. "If you see him, let him know," he said.

4. Dance girl Charo showed off generous portions of legs and buttocks on camera. But backstage, when asked about her breasts, she was more coy: "I don't believe in breast jobs. They're dangerous, don't get one!" she said. Her secret? She works out with two bras for support.

5. How will Chino y Nacho celebrate their Latin Grammy win for best urban album? "Pour the shots right here," said Nacho, pointing to his new gramophone.

6. Alejandro Sanz, winner of best male pop album, when asked if Bolivian president Evo Morales had influenced Hugo Chávez's decision to finally allow Sanz -- a critic of the Venezuelan president -- to perform in that country: "If they're talking about stuff like that, they're wasting their time. I hope they have other problems to talk about."

7. Trumpeter Christ Botti on why he recorded with Juan Luis Guerra, whom he had never met: "The best collaborations are artist to artist. He's a muso, a musician's musician."

8. Ben E. King says the biggest difference between his original version of the song and Prince Royce's is, "you can dance faster to it. It's been picked up by so many great artists, but what's happened now is, Prince Royce is so young, he's taken it to a whole new generation." Where did he first here this new version? "My granddaughter played it for me."

9. Mario Domm from Camila, after winning three Latin Grammys: "We wanted people to know that our first Latin Grammy wasn't an accident. We wanted them to know we're three people who give a lot of harmony to the universe; harmony that contrasts with the chaos of the world.

10. Banda El Recodo on how they avoid violence in Mexico: "We sing songs with other kinds of messages. The only threats we get are from our wives and kids, who want to see us and get upset when we're away on tour."

Zodiac tips just keep rolling in

Saturday, October 16, 2010

Another day, another set of Zodiac-killer tips -- this time hailing from as far away as Montana.

Two file drawers at The Chronicle are stuffed with such tips, but few as voluminous as the one mailed this week from John Cameron, a retired homicide detective from Great Falls, Mont. He sent a 207-page report, accompanied by several hundred exhibits and discussions of the bewildering messages Zodiac sent to police and the media during his unsolved murder spree in the Bay Area four decades ago.

Chronicle photo files
The gist of it all, Cameron said, is that the Zodiac is 77-year-old Edward Wayne Edwards -- who is alive and unwell in prison in Ohio, where he is serving two life terms in prison for a 1977 double murder. Cameron said he concluded, after a summer-long investigation, that Edwards murdered as the Zodiac "to show to the world that Portland, Ore., authorities arrested the wrong people" for his 1960 slaying of a couple parked on a lovers lane.

A wanted poster of the Zodiac killer, issued in 1969 by San Francisco police.

Edwards, Cameron said, went all over the country killing people over the past half-century, and was stopped only a year ago when he was arrested for the Ohio murders.

"This guy will turn out to be the most prolific serial killer that ever was," Cameron told The Chronicle. "He was a master at creating alibis and false birth certificates, and he killed everywhere, from one end of the country to the other."

The Zodiac killed at least five people in 1968 and 1969 in the Bay Area, and he taunted the press -- including The Chronicle -- and investigators with cryptic, boasting letters. He is the most infamous uncaught killer in American crime annals.

Cameron, who is an analyst for the Montana Board of Pardons and Parole, said he sent his Zodiac package to a dozen law enforcement agencies that have connections with the Zodiac or Edwards cases, including the San Francisco Police Department and the FBI.

"We haven't received anything yet, but we check out any new leads," said San Francisco police Lt. Lyn Tomioka.

Also dispatched urgently -- and they are always urgent, when it comes to the Zodiac case -- to The Chronicle this week was a set of Zodiac cipher decryptions that purport to prove that the killer was spelling out "Screw You" in the shape of male and female private parts, to taunt police. The tipster asked to remain anonymous.

These new leads join a giant pile of others of late, including those supposedly proving the killer is a composite of several police officers, is a prominent local poet, is a neighbor (lots of those, from coast to coast) or is the Unabomber (a persistent theory for years).

And there is last year's claim from Orange County real estate agent Deborah Perez that her father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, was the Zodiac. This ignited angry denials from Perez's stepsister, Janice Hendrickson of the Bay Area -- and a still-raging debate online from the hundreds of amateur Zodiac sleuths who stake out allegiances to one sister or another, not to mention the other hundreds of would-be Zodiac suspects.

Tomioka said her department hasn't closed the book on the Hendrickson lead. But that doesn't mean he's the bad guy.

"She (Perez) did provide us with some items that we followed up on, and we're still investigating," Tomioka said.

Karen Owen List- Sex Scandal Goes Viral

Thursday, October 7, 2010

The Karen Owen List is the result of a senior thesis joke, named ” An education beyond the classroom: excelling in the realm of horizontal academics”. The “thesis’ described in detail all the Duke University athletes she had slept with. It was posted online and spread like wildfire everywhere.
As a result, Karen Owen took down all her social network profiles, as she has become one of the most hated women in America this week.
The thesis is a power point presentation listing 13 Duke University athletes, along with detailed descriptions and 1 to 10 ratings. Owen’s list is pages long and contains names, dates and private physical attributes.
“There’s no going back now, but maybe Owen should have written out her thesis with pen on real paper, or printed out just one copy that she shared with her friends in person. By putting it in an electronic format and sending it out by email, she practically invited it to go viral”, said Forbes.
Karen Owen issued an apology for the list to “Jezebel” :”The people that are named are the kinds of people that everyone wants to be or be with. I regret it with all my heart. I would never intentionally hurt the people that are mentioned on that.”

ACORN Foe James O'Keefe Tried to Embarrass CNN's Abbie Boudreau on Porn-Strewn "Palace of Pleasure" Boat

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

It's hard to even know where to start with this one: James O'Keefe, the conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos essentially destroyed community organizing group ACORN, apparently attempted to lure CNN Correspondent Abbie Boudreau onto a boat potentially strewn with dildos and pornography, where he planned to faux-seduce her as hidden cameras filmed the whole thing.
Yes, you read that right.

CNN lays out the story here, and Boudreau herself explains what happened in the video below. Here's what happened: CNN had been working on a documentary about young conservative activists, O'Keefe among them; On August 10th, O'Keefe requested a private meeting with Boudreau, suggesting that he just wanted to talk because he was uncomfortable "about letting people into my sort of inner sanctum."

O'Keefe recorded the call without telling Boudreau, and emailed it to friends and colleagues. (It ultimately ended up in CNN's hands.) In the email, he said he was "getting closer" to getting to Boudreau and asked one colleague if "you think I could get her on the boat." Boudreau said later she had understood that she would be meeting with O'Keefe in his office.

When Boudreau showed up for the meeting in Maryland a week later, she was met by Izzy Santa, the executive director of O'Keefe's group, Project Veritas. A visibly nervous Santa asked to speak to Boudreau in the CNN correspondent's rented car, where Santa revealed that O'Keefe was attempting to set her up.

And what a setup it was. "Izzy told me that James was going to be dressed up and have strawberries and champagne on the boat, and he was going to hit on me the whole time," Boudreau recounts.
O'Keefe eventually emerged, and Boudreau had a brief discussion with him in which she said he did not have permission to film her; she declined to get on the boat, and soon left.

That was a good choice: According to a 13-page document titled "CNN Caper" about the plan obtained by the network, the "equipment needed" for the prank included "condom jar," "dildos," Alicia Keys music (though not Marvin Gaye because it is "too chiche)," lube, a ceiling mirror, posters and paintings of naked women, copies of Playboy and other pornographic magazines, Viagra pills, fuzzy handcuffs and a blindfold.

Also listed among the needed equipment are "hidden cams on the boat" and a "tripod and overt recorder near the bed, an obvious sex tape machine."

In an email expressing doubts about the operation, Santa wrote that O'Keefe "has staged the boat to be a palace of pleasure with all sorts of props, wants to have a bizarre sexual conversation with her."

The "CNN Caper" document laid out a message that O'Keefe would record in advance of the prank in which he would complain that CNN was planning "to portray me and my friends as crazies, as non-journalists, as unprofessional and likely as homophobes, racists or bigots of some sort."

For that reason, the script continued, O'Keefe would say, "I'm going to punk CNN. Abbie has been trying to seduce me to use me, in order to spin a lie about me. So, I'm going to seduce her, on camera, to use her for a video. This bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who comes on at five will get a taste of her own medicine, she'll get seduced on camera and you'll get to see the awkwardness and the aftermath."
The script was not written by O'Keefe, who emailed CNN to say he found "certain elements highly objectionable and inappropriate, and did not consider them for one minute following it." It was reportedly the work of Ben Wetmore, one of the young conservative activists tied to O'Keefe, who was among those charged earlier this year in an attempt to tamper with the office telephone system of Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.

The "CNN Caper" document also said the group wanted to expose, in a different operation, the "big lie" under which CNN operates, including their bias against conservatives and "their own internal racism against whites" as well as minorities.

The section of the "Caper" document that addresses the Boudreau plan includes a mock script in which O'Keefe tries to seduce Boudreau and explains, "the joke is that the tables have turned on CNN."

"Using hot blondes to seduce interviewees to get screwed on television, you are faux seducing her in order to screw her on television." (Boudreau has a long and impressive resume.)

If there is fallout, the document says, "make sure to emphasize Abbie's name and overall status to help burden her career with this video, incident and her bad judgment in pursuing you so aggressively."

It continues that "if they go on the attack, you should point out the hypocrisy in CNN using the inherent sexuality of these women to sell viewers and for ratings, passing up more esteemed and respectable journalists who aren't bubble-headed bleach blondes and keep the focus on CNN."

Santa - the Project Veritas executive director who warned Boudreau about the operation - reportedly remains in the group's payroll, though she has had her responsibilities taken away from her.
